Blue Carbon Collaborative

Location: International

Why It Matters

“Blue carbon” ecosystems – include salt marshes, mangrove trees, kelp, sea grasses, and other coastal ecosystems – are powerful mitigators of climate change. They store excess carbon dioxide and filter pollution. When wetlands are eroded or destroyed, our coasts become more fragile and can even release more carbon back into the air. Conversely, protecting and restoring blue carbon ecosystems can dramatically improve coastal health.

Around the world, many researchers, policymakers, government agencies, and practitioners are working to advance blue carbon ecosystems, but they face barriers such as restrictive permitting processes and limited funding. By working together, these global blue carbon efforts can progress individually and can advance our collective understanding of and support for stronger blue carbon ecosystems.

What We’re Doing

Coastal Quest and WILDCOAST convene members of the collaborative in quarterly virtual meetings to discuss and solve common challenges and establish partnerships across organizations. We also work in between meetings to ensure that blue carbon efforts are connected to other coastal work and advance key blue carbon policy and regulatory actions.

This allows a wide range of people and organizations working in blue carbon ecosystems to raise more funding, to develop and implement more and better protection and restoration projects, and to study and share the results of their work for the benefit of other communities and coastal areas.

Project Resources

The proceedings of the Blue Carbon Collaborative  are shared publicly, in order to help advance the field’s progress and understanding of blue carbon ecosystems and solutions.

Project Partners

The Blue Carbon Collaborative brings tremendous value through thoughtful convening, facilitation, and partner coordination, helping translate blue carbon science and policy conversations into shared priorities and practical action. Our partnership with Coastal Quest has been impactful, collaborative, and genuinely enjoyable!
